Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad (NICTD)

Randolph St. to Kensington (Metra) - Kensington to Michigan City - Michigan City to South Bend

Clicking on a photograph will open a new page with larger photos and a little more info about the station.
Kensington to Michigan City

Kensington - The Metra Electric platform at Kensington, shared with the South Shore - Westbound South Shore trains stop to drop off passengers on the way in to Chicago, Eastbound South Shore trains stop to make their last pickup on the way out of Chicago. (Travel between Kensington and Chicago is not permitted on South Shore Trains - Metra Electric trains serve that purpose.)

Hegeswich - The only NICTD only station in Illinois - all other Illinois stations are shared with the Metra Electric line. This is the first station where passengers on Eastbound trains from Chicago are permitted to disembark, and the last station to board Westbound trains to Chicago.
Hammond - This station was recently remodeled and High Level platforms were added. The Northern platform (to the left in this view) is used for Westbound trains headed to Chicago, the other platform is used for Eastbound trains. At the platforms the tracks diverge into a four track 'Gauntlet' arrangement, allowing passenger trains to pass close to the platform for loading, and freight trains to pass further away.

East Chicago - This is a low platform station located next to the Indiana Toll Road.
Clark Road - a flag stop, just West of The Old Gauntlet Bridge.

Gary Metro Center - Located on broadway in downtown Gary, the Metro Center (not shown, to the left) is also a major bus station. There is a lift and escalator from platform level down to the connecting walkway to the Metro Center.
Miller - A recently upgraded station.

Ogden Dunes - Major construction work here as the line is being double tracked as well as the addition of new double platforms. Up until November 1997 Ogden Dunes was a flag stop.
Just East of Ogden Dunes is the site of the June 1998 Accident.

Dune Park - This station is one of the major commuter stations, and the home office location for NICTD.
Beverly Shores - This historic building houses a small museum, as well as hosting a South Shore flag stop.

Michigan City - 11th St

On the last street running section of the South Shore in downtown Michigan City, the railroad right-of-way runs down the middle of 11th St downtown, and 10th St on the west side of town. (Construction was in progress when these photos were taken - the barracades are not normally blocking the station.)

Michigan City - Carroll St (Shops) Station and Yard

The Michigan City Yard is used for overnight storage and maintainance of all electric trains, as well as the diesel locomotive shops and the operations center for the South Shore freight operation.

Some of the information in the track diagrams is based of diagrams by Bill Vandervoort available on South Shore Rail Tips Page of the Chicago Transit/Metra Railfan Page, however corrections, yard info and photographs have been added to the diagram, the diagram has been flipped to run West to East, and the focus of the coloring has been changed to elecrification rather than signalling. The photographs on this page and connected pages were taken by me. Most were taken September 16th and September 27th, 1998.
