Movements and Capacities
According to NICTD, there are 55 operable South Shore cars, of which 51 are needed
for each weekday's trips, 48 of those need to be ready to run at 4:00am for the
morning peak service to Chicago. There are 8 new cars on order to be delivered in
June of 2000. (My count of current peak capacity to Chicago is 4,960.)
Note that there are 58 cars on the current roster.
The three cars currently not in service were damaged in recent accidents.

Consists and capacities based on observations made on October 30th, 1998. Note that
these are maximum capacities - the South Shore often moves unmanned cars as part of
their trains, adding conductors as the train progesses along the line. South Bend
times are shown as Central Time, which is correct during the summer but trains arrive
and depart one hour later South Bend time from October to April.
