On October 31st, 1996, Michigan City officials received a $698,000 Federal grant in order to refurbish 1928 South Shore cars and use them as a "Trolly to the Dunes" (Press Release) The cars will run a circuit connecting the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Lighthouse Place, Washington Park and a 'future' riverboat casino. No word where this plan is today. (But the pond boat is there.)

On September 15th, 1998, Indiana officials were expected to approve a $3 million appropriation of Indiana tax dollars to match a $16 million Federal grant in order to purchase up to 10 new cars for the South Shore. (Press Release) NICTD has annouced that 8 new cars will be added to the fleet in June 2000.

An interesting note about the new cars, they will have AC traction engine as opposed to the DC engines currently in use. The entire line is 1500v DC overhead electric power, with power supplied by 10 substations.
