Signal Aspects for Hegewisch and Hammond | |||
The following diagrams detail the signal aspects possible for CP 70.5 at the Hegewisch station,
CP 70.0 just east of Hegewich and CP 69.2 and CP 68.8 in Hammond. Both tracks at both stations have
high platforms and gauntlets. CP 70.5 has a diamond crossing of an NS line. CP 70.0 has a connection to the CSS Freight yard. CP 69.2 has a westbound connection to the CSS Freight yard and eastbound connection to the Monon Branch. ![]() Westbound TrainsWith normal right hand running trains heading westbound from Chicago use track 2. Westbound trains may also use track 1.![]() Follow the signals westbound from the bottom of the diagram to the top as all aspects available are shown at each location. The smaller signals show which aspects at the next signal west will lead to the aspect illustrated (on each track). Restricting is always shown if the track is occupied between locations. Stop is shown if the track is occupied at the location (before the opposing signals) or the train does not have permission to proceed. Approach and Diverging Approach are not shown westbound at CP 70.0. A Restricting signal is displayed. CP 68.8 Approach and Diverging Approach are shown westbound at CP 68.8. The intermediate signal at 672-2 (672-1 on track 1) provides advance warning. The following diagram compares signals for a train headed toward a Restricting or Stop signal at CP 69.2. Advance Approach at 672-2 and Approach at CP 68.8 indicates the train will take the track closest to the platform at the gauntlet but must be prepared to stop at CP 69.2. Approach at 672-2 and Diverging Approach at CP 68.8 indicates the train will use the bypass track at the gauntlet and be prepared to stop at CP 69.2. Approach is also shown at 672-2 if CP 68.8 is Restricting or Stop. This configuration allows a passenger train stopping at the platform to enter CP 68.8 on an Approach signal (instead of Restricting) or a freight train to pass on the bypass track and enter the state line yard at CP 69.2. ![]() Monon Branch The Monon Branch (West Lake corridor) enters the main line at CP 69.2 using a diverging signal as shown below. There is no crossover to track 2 for westbound trains. Trains will cross over to track 2 (normal for right hand running) at CP 70.5. ![]() Eastbound TrainsWith normal right hand running trains heading eastbound from Chicago use track 1. Eastbound trains may also use track 2.![]() Follow the signals eastbound from the bottom of the diagram to the top as all aspects available are shown at each location. The smaller signals show which aspects at the next signal west will lead to the aspect illustrated (on each track). Restricting is always shown if the track is occupied between locations. Stop is shown if the track is occupied at the location (before the opposing signals) or the train does not have permission to proceed. Approach and Diverging Approach at CP 70.5 eastbound follow the pattern shown above for CP 68.8 westbound. CP 69.2 Approach and Diverging Approach are not shown eastbound at CP 69.2 for trains remaining on the main line. A Restricting signal is displayed. Diverging Approach is available at CP 69.2 for trains leaving the main line for the Monon Branch. Monon Branch ![]() Trains traveling to the Monon Branch must approach CP 69.2 on track 1 (the right hand track eastbound). Any trains on track 2 east of CP 70.0 will need to cross over at CP 70.0. The train will then pass the Hammond Gateway station and travel south on the branch. Signal Progression ![]() Westbound trains travel right to left approaching CPs and even numbered intermediate signals. Eastbound trains travel left to right approaching CPs and odd numbered intermediate signals. (Track numbers follow the dash in signal numbers on intermediate signals.) If a train is present in a block marked in red or the signal entering that block is set to stop the signals in the preceeding blocks will follow the approach and clear aspects shown. Flashing red denotes blocks where restricting replaces approach. |
