Signal Aspects for Dune Park | |||
The following diagrams detail the signal aspects possible for CP 43.5 and CP 43.9 at Dune Park.
Intermediates at 413/414 and 451/452 are also shown. Track 1 has a high platform and gauntlets![]() Westbound TrainsWith normal right hand running trains heading westbound to Chicago use track 2. Westbound trains may also use track 1.To take advantage of the high platform at Dune Park trains normally use track 1. Track 2 from Beverly Shores This diagram shows the signals for a westbound train arriving at CP 43.5 on track 2 (right hand running). The smaller signals show the possible aspects at the next signal west for each aspect illustrated. The black lines next to the small signal illustrate the path through the interlocking. ![]() The most common path through CP 43.5 for trains arriving on track 2 from Beverly Shores starts in the second column. Trains receive Approach Diverging at 414-2, then Diverging Clear at CP 43.5 and Clear at CP 43.9 to remain on track 1 past Ogden Dunes and possibly Miller. Trains returning to track 2 after stopping at Dune Park will receive Diverging Clear Approach Diverging at CP 43.5 and Diverging Clear at CP 43.9. Trains receiving Clear at 414-2 will remain on track 2 past the platform at Dune Park (a stop can be made at the low platform). The train will then continue west on track 2. Trains receiving Advance Approach at 414-2 will receive Approach at CP 43.5 and approach CP 43.9 prepared to stop. (A Restricting signal is used at CP 43.9 when a freight train is clear to enter Bailly Yard. Diverging Approach is not used at CP 43.5 on track 2.) Trains remaining on track 1 past CP 43.9 will pass 452-1 which does not display Approach Diverging and is a single head signal (Clear, Approach or Restricting only). Note the special "gauntlet indicator" light next to 414-2 and the westbound track 2 signal at CP 43.5. This light is green when a train following the diverging route will use the gauntlet to add distance from the high platform on track 1. Use of the gauntlet indicator is rare and has not been observed at the time this page was written. Most freight trains pass Dune Park on track 2. Passenger train use of Diverging Clear without the gauntlet indicator has been observed. Restricting is always shown if the track is occupied between locations. Stop is shown if the track is occupied at the location (before the opposing signals) or the train does not have permission to proceed. Track 1 from Beverly Shores Trains arriving westbound on track 1 will see the signals in this diagram. The standard signals for a gauntlet are used on track 1 with the "normal" route passing close to the platform and the "diverging" route giving extra clearance. ![]() Advance Approach at 414-1 and Approach at CP 43.5 indicates the train can use the platform track at CP 43.5 but must be prepared to stop at CP 43.9. Approach at 414-1 indicates a Restricting or Stop signal at CP 43.5. It is also used when a train will use the gauntlet to bypass the platform before stopping at CP 43.9. Trains remaining on track 1 past CP 43.9 will pass 452-1 which does not display Approach Diverging and is a single head signal (Clear, Approach or Restricting only). The track 2 signals at CP 43.5 and CP 43.9 are not shown on this diagram. Eastbound TrainsWith normal right hand running trains heading eastbound from Chicago use track 1. Eastbound trains may also use track 2.Track 1 at Dune Park Station This diagram shows the signals for an eastbound train arriving at CP 43.9 on track 1 (right hand running). The smaller signals show the possible aspects at the next signal east for each aspect illustrated. The black lines next to the small signal illustrate the path through the interlocking. ![]() Note the special "gauntlet indicator" light next to the eastbound track 1 signal at CP 43.5 and all signals at CP 43.9. This light is green when a train following a diverging route will use the gauntlet to pass add distance from the platform. After passing through the gauntlet the train may remain on track 1 or cross over to track 2 (as controlled by the dispatcher). Approach and Diverging Approach are not shown eastbound at CP 43.9. A Restricting signal is displayed. The signals in the box in the lower left appear on track 2 for trains crossing over to use track 1 past the station. Track 2 at Dune Park Station Trains remaining on track 2 past CP 43.5 will see the signals in this diagram. ![]() The signals in the box in the center appear for trains crossing over from track 2 to use track 1 past the station. Restricting is always shown if the track is occupied between locations. Stop is shown if the track is occupied at the location (before the opposing signals) or the train does not have permission to proceed. The signals in the box on the left are seen by freight trains leaving the east end of Bailly Yard. The top aspect sends the train east on track 2. The second aspect crosses over to track 1 and uses the gauntlet to pass the platform. The bottom two aspects show routes that pass close to the platform. Approach and Diverging Approach are not shown eastbound at CP 43.9. A Restricting signal is displayed. Signal Progression ![]() Westbound trains travel right to left approaching CPs and even numbered intermediate signals. Eastbound trains travel left to right approaching CPs and odd numbered intermediate signals. (Track numbers follow the dash in signal numbers on intermediate signals.) If a train is present in a block marked in red or the signal entering that block is set to stop the signals in the preceeding blocks will follow the approach and clear aspects shown. Flashing red denotes blocks where restricting replaces approach. |
